چکیده

Synopsis — This article focuses on the way concepts of feminism and femininity, often considered oppositional, intersect within two contemporary Turkish women’s magazines, Kim and Kadınca. The methodology is derived from feminist critical theory and cultural studies, and includes textual analysis of the magazines as well as structured interviews with their editors. A range of potentially competing interests is identified in the production of the magazines, those of editors, owners, and advertisers, and the ways in which these are managed and negotiated is explored. It is argued that the incorporation of feminist discourses with patriarchal and commercial discourses offers a repertoire of subjectivities to women readers, some complementary and others contradictory. © 2001 Elsevier Science Ltd.
